Rockstar Games is launching pre-orders for the game Grand Theft Auto VIstarting June 25. The biggest mystery that followed GTA 6 for months was the price, and the publisher finally revealed the official details and confirmed that the amounts will not be unrealistic.

Anyone who opts for the digital version will be able to pre-download the game starting November 12. So they will be ready for the release scheduled for November 19.
The end of the disk era? GTA VI comes exclusively via in-box code

However, industry analysts warn of serious downsides to a full digital transition:
- Loss of access: If the game is removed from the platform, users lose the chance to get it if there is no physical copy
- Loss of order: In case of user profile blocking on a platform, gamers may remain permanently locked out of the paid (purchased) digital library
- Unable to share: Digital games cannot be resold, exchanged or simply loaned to friends in the same way that a disc is shared
- Storage problem: Long-term preservation of game history becomes drastically more difficult, because content exists exclusively on servers and hard drives. A similar problem already affects mobile games and series on streaming services that disappear because they never had a tangible release.
Why did Rockstar decide on complete digitization?
Although Rockstar did not immediately respond to inquiries about the reasons for abandoning physical discs, there are two main reasons being discussed in gaming circles. The first is preventing premature leaks, which is a problem this publisher has already struggled with during development. Digital distribution allows the game to be unlocked in the same second for all players worldwide.
Another reason lies in the assumption that GTA VI is so massive in terms of textures and worlds that the file sizes simply exceed the capacity of standard Blu-ray discs for consoles.
This code-in-the-box approach has been used by other publishers in the past, Bethesda for Fallout 4 Anniversary i Skyrim Anniversary on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. However, given that it is a title that dictates trends and is already changing the entire calendar of gaming premieres for 2026, Rockstar’s move could become a historical turning point that will encourage all other publishers to do away with discs permanently.
