The once popular search engine, formerly known as Ask JeevesAsk.com was officially shut down at the beginning of May 2026. This ended the almost three-decade-long history of one of the pioneers of Internet search.
The service is started back in 1996, and he attracted a wider audience with a specific approach. Users could ask questions in natural language instead of typing keywords. It was this concept, along with the recognizable character of the digital butler Jeeves, that set it apart in the early days of the Internet.
Although it was innovative, Ask Jeeves failed to keep up with the competition, primarily with Google, which over time dominated the search market. After he took over the company in 2005 InterActiveCorp (IAC), followed by rebranding to Ask.com. Unfortunately, the distinctive butler was also gradually removed from the identity of the platform.
Over the years, the service lost its importance. Already in 2010, he gave up on developing his own search technology and shifted his focus to questions and answers.
ASK.comThe final decision to shut down was made as part of a broader strategic change of the company IACwhich decided to leave the Internet search segment. In the farewell message, the company thanked its employees and the millions of users who have used the platform over the years.
The shutdown of Ask.com symbolically marks the end of an era of the Internet. Although it seems outdated today, its natural language-based search model is considered the forerunner of modern AI tools like ChatGPT and similar systems.
In a way, the idea popularized by Ask Jeeves almost 30 years ago is gaining importance again today, but in a much more advanced form.
