Guide to Buying a Smartwatch in 2026

A smart watch has long been more than just an accessory for displaying the current time. Today it is used for notifications, health monitoring, pulse and sleep measurement, sports activities, contactless payment and emergency calls. The problem is that the market is full of models, from cheap devices to expensive flagship watches, and the specifications are often used more for marketing than for a realistic image of quality and everyday use.

The first rule when buying is ecosystem selection. A smart watch mostly depends on the phone it is used with, so iPhone users get the most from choosing the Apple Watch model. Android users, on the other hand, shouldn’t chase the Apple Watch, as the experience is limited and unprofitable. It is better to choose a watch of the same brand as the phone, for example Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo or Samsung model, because then the notifications, synchronization, health data and additional functions are the most complete.

This does not mean that a watch from another brand cannot work, but that the experience will often be inferior and incomplete. It doesn’t make much sense to sacrifice a stable connection, fast sync and reliable notifications for one specific feature that is rarely used.

A smart watch in 2026 should match your phone, habits and real needs

Another important decision is choice of watch type. Full smart watches have an advanced system, support for applications, calls, independent connectivity and more complete health functions, but usually less autonomy. Lighter sports smartwatches forego some of the advanced apps, but offer longer battery life, heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, activity, notifications and payments. For most users, just such a model can be a more rational choice.

With the specifications, you should not read every item, but look at four key things: screen, autonomy, sensors and materials. OLED screen is the best choice today, because it offers better contrast, a nicer display and a good Always-On mode. You should not chase an extremely high refresh rate, because on the small screen of the watch, the difference is hard to notice. Maximum illumination is much more important, especially if the watch is used outside in daylight.

Autonomy should be viewed with caution. The figures given by the manufacturers are often valid for ideal conditions, while real use with constant heart rate measurement, sleep monitoring and notifications can reduce battery life by 30 to 50%. If you don’t want to charge often, choose a lighter sports model. If you need apps, calls and advanced features, count on charging more often.

sensors are the heart of a smart watch. As a minimum, you should ask for the measurement of pulse, oxygen in the blood, sleep and temperature. For older users, active athletes or those who monitor their health more seriously, EKG, stress monitoring and more advanced blood vessel analysis are also useful. Cheap unknown models often offer attractive specifications, but with unreliable measurements that do not have much practical value.

Materials they also make a difference. Scratch-resistant glass or sapphire glass is a better choice, while cheap plastic looks worn out quickly. For bracelets, silicone, fabric and metal are practical, depending on whether you use the watch more for sports, work or everyday wear.

The most common mistakes are buying an unknown “top model” with unrealistic specifications, paying for functions that will not be used, chasing the latest generation at any cost and blindly believing in big numbers for water resistance. For most users, 50 meters of water resistance is sufficient for washing hands, rain, sweat and swimming.

A smart watch should therefore be chosen according to the phone, lifestyle and budget. Lock down the ecosystem first, then decide whether autonomy or a complete smart experience is more important to you, and only then look at style and appearance. This is the easiest way to avoid buying a watch that looks nice, but connects poorly, measures incorrectly and quickly ends up in a drawer, advises mydrivers.
