Microsoft has announced the opening of a new Beta channel for Windows 11 26H1, the version of the system intended for devices with Snapdragon X2 and RTX Spark platforms. This is the first Beta branch that is fully compatible with those devices, because until now they could only use the Experimental channel.
The reason is that Snapdragon X2 and upcoming RTX Spark devices are not compatible with Windows 11 25H2 version. They can only run on Windows 11 26H1 or later editions, so they previously did not have access to the standard Beta channel that was tied to 25H2 devices.
Windows 11 26H1 targets new Arm devices
With the introduction of the new channel, Windows 11 26H1 users can now choose between Beta and Experimental branches, just like 25H2 users. The difference between these two channels is important, because Experimental brings features at an early stage of development, with lower stability and the possibility that certain new features may never appear in the final release.
The beta channel is intended for more mature features that are already stable enough and that Microsoft has practically confirmed will arrive through future feature updates. This is especially important for new devices, as it gives users and developers a more predictable way to test the system.
Windows 11 26H1 is not a classic edition intended for all Windows 11 users. It is a special version developed for the new generation of Arm SoC platforms, primarily Snapdragon X2 and Nvidia RTX Spark devices. Therefore, Microsoft does not plan to offer 26H1 to the entire existing Windows 11 base.
Currently Windows 11 25H2 and 26H1 exist in parallel. Microsoft is trying to ensure that both versions have the same set of functions and as similar a user experience as possible, while the real difference is in the basis of the system, that is, in the support for the new generation of Arm hardware.
This move shows that Microsoft is more seriously preparing Windows for the upcoming Arm computers, but also for Nvidia platforms that target local AI tasks. Instead of new hardware being locked in the less stable Experimental channel, the 26H1 now gets a more orderly development path through Beta testing.
