Artemis III will be the most complex NASA mission ever

Until now, NASA has not carried out a mission quite like the Artemis III program, which is shaping up to be one of the most complex space flights in human history. The agency has released new details about the flight planned for next year, and if everything goes according to plan, the astronauts will perform several historic maneuvers during the mission.

Artemis is a new generation NASA program whose goal is to return astronauts to the surface of the Moon. Artemis III will not be just another test flight, but a test of the Orion spacecraft’s ability to rendezvous and rendezvous with two different commercial lunar landing craft in orbit.

It is about SpaceX Starship and Blue Origin Blue Moon landers. NASA plans to send a crew of four in the Orion capsule using the Space Launch System, or SLS rocket. Orion will first enter Earth orbit and then separately rendezvous and dock with each of the two lunar landers over approximately two weeks.

Artemis III represents the most demanding orbital maneuver in the history of the NASA program

If Artemis III succeeds, that mission will pave the way for Artemis IV, which should land astronauts on the moon. Before that, NASA must master an extremely complex series of launches, orbital rendezvous, docking and coordination between the crew in space and control teams on Earth.

Jeremy Parsons, Artemis program manager, described Artemis III as a “complicatedly choreographed dance” with a demanding launch sequence involving multiple launch pads and equally complex in-flight operations. According to him, this is precisely what makes this mission one of the most complex and ambitious that NASA has ever attempted.

It is particularly important to note that until now NASA has not had a human mission in which one crew meets and joins two separate spacecraft that are themselves designed to transport people. Such a level of coordination is extremely rare in the history of spaceflight.

The only similar example is mentioned from 1986, when the Soviet Soyuz T-15 mission transported cosmonaut Leonid Kizim to the Salyut 7 space station, and then to the then Mir station. Artemis III goes a step further, as it includes more commercial systems, different launch platforms and preparation for future landings on the moon.

Therefore, Artemis III is not only important as a technical test of the Orion spacecraft. It is a test of the entire new lunar architecture, in which NASA no longer counts only on its own rocket and capsule, but also on commercial landers that will play a key role in returning people to the moon, writes Space.
