The Euro NCAP organization announced the results of the last round of its vehicle safety testing for 2025, in which the new Mercedes CLA stood out. This model, available in electric and gasoline versions, achieved the maximum five stars, achieving high marks in all four evaluated categories. With a result of 94% for the protection of adult passengers and 89% for the protection of children, the CLA was also praised for its ability to automatically recognize the child seat and turn off the relevant airbags. Along with Mercedes, the status of five-star safety leaders was confirmed by Mazda CX-5, Deepal S05, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen T-Roc.
While the Porsche Cayenne and VW T-Roc scored an excellent 91% for protecting adults, the Mazda CX-5 particularly stood out in the category of protecting vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, with a score of 93%. Mazda’s system to prevent the doors from opening in front of oncoming cyclists or vehicles is highlighted as a key safety feature, similar to the Mercedes CLA. Although China’s Deepal S05 achieved a high 94% for adult protection, Euro NCAP criticized the manufacturer for the S07 model, tested earlier, for allowing driver distraction warnings to be permanently switched off instead of improving the system’s robustness.
The new Hyundai NEXO, only the third hydrogen-powered car tested by Euro NCAP experts, attracted special attention during the test. The NEXO proved to be on par with conventional SUVs, suggesting to consumers that alternative energy sources do not mean compromising on safety. On the other hand, the importance of choosing additional safety equipment is demonstrated by the example of the Kia EV4. The standard version of this vehicle received four stars, while the model equipped with the optional “DriveWise ADAS” package, which includes additional collision avoidance radars, earned the maximum five stars.
In the category of vehicles with four stars were the new Alpine A390, Kia PV5, Jeep Compass and Toyota models Aygo X and Yaris. The electric sports model Alpine A390 recorded a result of 74% for the protection of adult passengers, which is identical to the result of the significantly smaller and more affordable Toyota Yaris. Most of these vehicles, including the Jeep Compass and Toyota Aygo X, lost key points for lacking more effective crash avoidance systems, falling below the highest level of safety standards in this round of testing – but they’re still very safe cars.
“As we approach the end of 2025, Euro NCAP continues to record impressive results. This is particularly gratifying given that more cars were tested this year than in any previous year in the organization’s history. For the most part, car manufacturers continue to respond to our impartial and rigorous testing, improving the safety of their models, generation after generation. With the new protocols coming into force from 2026, the bar will be raised even higher and we look forward to positive reactions from car manufacturers as they will continue to prioritize passive and active consumer safety,” Dr. Aled Williamsprogram director at Euro NCAP. Below is a detailed overview of the results of the last round of testing according to current standards.
