This year, Mercedes-AMG is celebrating 30 years of the presence of its safety vehicles in the Formula 1 World Championship. Since 1996, the brand with the three-pointed star has provided official vehicles for intervention on the track, including the Safety Car, which leads the cars in case of bad weather conditions or incidents, and the Medical Car, intended to quickly arrive at the scene of an accident.
Technically more advanced
As part of this jubilee season, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ model made its debut as a new officially licensed FIA F1 Safety Car, starting with the Hungarian Grand Prix held last weekend. This model succeeds the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in this role, which has been a safety car since 2022 and becomes the 14th Mercedes-AMG model in this role.
The new safety car is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that develops a power of 450 kW (612 hp) and a maximum torque of 850 Nm. For the first time in the history of official F1 safety cars, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive is installed, adapted for optimal grip in dry and wet track conditions. Of course, the former DTM driver is still behind the wheel Bernd Mayländer.
Aerodynamic redesign
The model also features a redesigned aerodynamic package compared to its predecessor. Body changes include a more pronounced front air splitter (splitter) and additional aerodynamic flaps on the front. The mentioned modifications ensure better stability and controllability at high speeds on the race track. A package of functional improvements includes an active rear wing and modified panels on the chassis of the vehicle, which achieves more efficient airflow under the car.
Among other things, the arrangement of the light signals was changed. Instead of installing a massive light system on the roof, the new model integrates LED lights and cameras directly into the active rear wing and flap assembly. In addition, the model is equipped with LED flashers integrated into the front bumper, as well as inside the front and rear light assemblies.
In addition to the safety car, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is also present on the tracks as the official FIA F1 Medical Car, in use from the 2022 season. Powered by a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with a power of 470 kW (639 hp), this medical car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 315 km/h, which makes it the fastest medical car in the history of Formula 1.
