An extremely rare automotive jewel appeared at the public auction of The Collectables platform – a five-door Volkswagen Golf 1.5 GL from 1983. What sets this particular example apart from any other surviving model of the first generation is the fact that the odometer shows all of them – 36. The car is part of a unique collection from the former Audi factory in Brussels, which was closed a few years ago, and the collection was only transferred to the Netherlands last year.
Condition – like new
According to information from the factory, this is believed to be probably the last Golf “unit” produced at the Brussels facility. The vehicle comes in the distinctive color Diamond Silver Metallic, and is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine with a power of 70 hp. Despite being a five-door model weighing only 800 kilograms, the car retains its original, stripped-down character – the interior does not contain a radio or headrests, which emphasizes its authenticity from the early eighties.
Although it lacks some elements of comfort, this Golf is specific for the built-in rev counter, the famous “4+E” gearbox and the aluminum rims with extra wide Goodyear tires. Given the minimal mileage, the vehicle is in factory condition, fully original and has a fully traceable history, making it one of the most desirable examples for serious collectors.
Not sold yet
However, the seller emphasizes that potential buyers must be aware of the specific conditions of sale. Since the car has been standing for more than four decades, technical procedures will be required to bring it back to driving condition – so it is considered that it is primarily intended for display and has the character of a museum exhibit. According to the terms of the auction, the new owner must undertake not to use the car in public traffic or to disassemble it.
The first round of the auction ended on March 24 with no bids received, and its starting price was 25,500 euros. For one of the best-preserved and most interesting examples of the first generation Golf, the lucky collector could soon pay a little less than that.
