The Mazda 2 and CX-3 have been on the market since 2014, persevering through a series of redesigns and minor annual updates that have kept them modern enough to stay relevant in their respective segments. However, every model eventually reaches the end of its journey, and it seems that point is approaching for Mazda’s smallest models.
According to a report by Japan’s Creative Trend, which cites internal sales documents, Mazda plans to end production of the Mazda 2 and CX-3 during 2026. Considering the time frame, this move makes sense. These are the longest-lived models in the brand’s current line-up, and such longevity rarely goes unnoticed, especially in segments that require constant evolution and innovation.
More specifically, production of the CX-3 is expected to end in March, followed by the shutdown of the Mazda 2 in June. Until then, Mazda will continue to take domestic orders until each model reaches its final quota. After that, remaining stock will be sold while supplies last.
Will Mazda replace the CX-3 and 2 models?
Despite earlier speculation that the brand could completely withdraw from the subcompact vehicle segment, such a scenario is looking less and less likely. Hiroshima seems to have other plans in motion. The best indicator of Mazda 2’s future is the Vision X-Compact concept that debuted at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show.
The concept has a body hatchbacka with modern styling and an interior equipped with AI-powered features. Interestingly, the Vision X-Compact is even 255 millimeters shorter than the current Mazda 2, and if that footprint carries over to production, Mazda’s next entry-level model could move into the city car segment, rather than remaining a traditional supermini. Either way, it could arrive by 2027 as the brand’s new entry into global markets.
As for the CX-3, its sales in global markets have been solid enough to suggest that it would be worthwhile to work on a successor. Back at the beginning of last year, Mazda teased a glimpse of what could follow during an official presentation in Thailand, where two design sketches showed a compact SUV with a wider stance and sharper proportions.
The styling seemed to borrow elements from the latest CX-5 model. This upcoming model could carry the CX-20 badge, although nothing has been confirmed yet. Its global launch remains uncertain, but if it goes ahead, it would likely target rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross and the growing compact SUV competition.
