Sales of PS5 games on disc are in sharp decline – as much as 85% of games are now purchased digitally

Sony revealed the details of PlayStation’s business in the first three months of 2026, and with it the fact that digital sales of games jumped to a share of as much as 85%.

A new financial report on PlayStation’s operations for the period of the first three months of 2026 has been published.

However, one statistic stands out.

Of all PlayStation game sales in the first quarter of 2026, digital games had a share of 85%. This is a growth of 5% in the last year and the highest share of sales that digital games have had so far on PlayStation.

Or in translation: fewer and fewer people are buying physical copies of games for PlayStation consoles.

However, it is worth emphasizing that a good part of today’s games (especially indie productions) are not released in physical form, i.e. on disk. However, this has been the case for years, and the share of sales of digital games on PlayStation is increased from 53% to a high of 85% in 2018.

As the percentage of sales of physical copies of games decreases, the question of what will happen to the physical distribution of games on discs in the future of PlayStation comes into focus. Already, 2/3 of the PlayStation 5 console models do not come with a disc reader, so it is very likely that the PlayStation 6 will not have a division into standard and digital editions, but the disc reader could initially be an additional and optional equipment.
