Sony has announced that its latest AAA game, developed by studio Bungie, will be available to play for free ahead of its official release. The sci-fi PvPvE extraction shooter game Marathon will receive an open stress-test server status, intended for all interested players.
Server testing will be available from February 26th to March 2nd. During that period, players will be able to try out the basic mechanics of the game, exploring maps, using the so-called Runner bodies and the contract system, which will serve as a realistic check before a possible purchase.
Sony organizes a free stress test on all platforms
It is important to point out that the testing is not limited to Sony consoles only. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms via Steam, without the need for a PlayStation Plus subscription or owning a PS5 console.
In the game, players assume the role of explorers who arrive at the abandoned colony of Tau Ceti IV, where they collect resources, but at the same time have to survive encounters with enemy units and other players. The concept is reminiscent of popular extraction titles, where PvE and PvP threats are combined in one game.
In recent years, Sony has invested heavily in the game service. After the great success of Helldivers 2, but also the failure of the short-lived Concord game, Marathon is emerging as the next big test of Sony’s strategy in this segment.
Open and free testing clearly shows that the company wants the widest possible audience to get a direct impression of the game before its full launch.
