The European premiere of the ninth generation Toyota Hilux, for the first time also available on electricity

Toyota presented the ninth generation of its cult car to the European public for the first time at the Brussels Motor Show, which takes place from January 9 to 18. pick-upa Hilux. Although it brings significant technological advances, the new Hilux, according to the announcements, remains faithful to the fundamental principles of quality, durability and reliability, maintaining a robust chassis construction that enables it to have advanced off-road capabilities.

Selection of drive systems

In line with Toyota’s strategy of multiple solutions to achieve carbon neutrality, the new model offers a wide range of electrified powertrains. Customers in Europe will be offered two main options: a 48V mild hybrid system paired with a 2.8-liter diesel engine and, for the first time in the model’s history, an all-electric version.

The hybrid version, which is expected to be the best-seller on the European market, uses a lithium-ion battery for quieter operation and better fuel efficiency. This model retains a payload of one tonne and a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes. Off-road capabilities are further improved with systems such as Multi-Terrain Select (which optimizes settings on different surfaces) and Panoramic View Monitor (screen for precise maneuvering), and the vehicle can still overcome water obstacles up to 700 mm deep.

On the other hand, the Hilux BEV represents a milestone as the first vehicle of its type with zero exhaust gas emissions. It is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 59.2 kWh and two electric axles (eAxles) for permanent all-wheel drive. According to the WLTP standard, it will offer a range of up to 257 km in mixed driving, or up to 380 km in city conditions. Despite the electric drive, the ground clearance of 212 mm and the same maximum wading depth of 700 mm as conventional models have been maintained.

The new exterior design follows the “Tough and Agile” theme (solid and agile), emphasizing strength and a contemporary look, while in Europe the model will be available exclusively as a double cab version. All new-generation models will come standard with electric power steering and the extensive Toyota T-Mate package of active safety and driver assistance systems.

Availability on the market

The introduction of the new generation to the European market will take place in stages during 2026. The first to arrive in showrooms will be the all-electric Hilux BEV, whose sales start is scheduled for April. After that, in July 2026, the launch of the hybrid version will follow. In select markets outside of Europe, Toyota will continue to offer standard gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.

Although the basic technical specifications of the drive are already known, more detailed information about equipment levels, specific performance for individual markets and prices will be announced at a later date.
