This six-part series, recorded in an Australian-American-British co-production in the early hours of 2022, appeared, and the only reason I decided to watch it was because I read somewhere that it was “Memento-like”. Unfortunately, as I guessed, “The Tourist” with the cult Nolan thriller can’t fit into the same sentence, and the only thing that connects them is the fact that both main characters have experienced amnesia. In “The Tourist”, he is a mysterious guy who experiences an accident right at the beginning in a scene that is almost copied from Spielberg’s “Duel”. After being chased by a truck, this guy will end up with an Irish-British accent (Jamie Dornan) who remembers absolutely nothing in the hospital.
But, obviously, many remember him very well, because very soon more people will try to kill him, and nothing is clear to the poor man. In parallel with the search for identity, he will try to find out what is going on. As he recovers in the hospital, we will realize that somewhere in the Australian desert, some Greek was buried alive. The mysterious fat cowboy (Icelander Olafur Dari Olafsson) is also looking for a nameless man. His case, on the other hand, was assigned to obese police novice Helen (Danielle MacDonald), who is engaged to an even fatter manipulative and possessive type. A handsome waitress (Shalom Brune – Franklin) from a café will come to the aid of some Australian wolf fuckers. There’s also a mysterious Greek who pours liquid LSD into a water bottle who will also head to Australia in search of a nameless man who has apparently gotten involved in something very dangerous.
The story is full of twists and surprises, even intriguing at first, and the author duo, brothers Harry and Jack Williams, tried to improve it (mostly unsuccessful) by trying to break the seriousness with humor. Although the plot takes place in those typical Australian wastelands, it was recorded a bit in a Western style with an almost typical Moricone musical theme, but it was not God knows what. “Tourist” proved to be a somewhat childish attempt to copy various styles and the series is obviously trying to evoke the spirit of Tarantino, the Coen brothers and all those who tried to copy them in the 1990s, but there is a lack of style, charm and spirit needed to something like this functioned on a higher level other than mediocre entertainment. Rating 6.5 / 10.
