The first sketch of the ninth generation of the legendary Golf appeared in public, after Volkswagen officially presented it to employees at the Wolfsburg factory. The silhouette of the ninth generation of their best-selling model was revealed as part of a presentation organized by the IG Metall trade union, and served as a confirmation of the company’s commitment to the parent factory where this model will continue to be produced.
Modernized, but tied to tradition
The first published image reveals key aesthetic and functional changes compared to the current model. A more prominent roof spoiler and specific rear section are visible, suggesting a focus on aerodynamic performance. Such modifications are crucial for increasing energy efficiency and reach, given that the ninth generation will be originally developed as a fully electric vehicle for the first time.
It is assumed that the presented model represents an electric variant, given the larger wheelbase, typical for the SSP platform. This platform provides a more spacious interior and uses an 800-volt architecture.
Although it is focusing strongly on electrification, Volkswagen will not completely abandon internal combustion engines. In addition to the electric model, which will probably bear the name ID. Golf, classic versions will remain in the offer. These versions will be thoroughly upgraded variants of the current model, equipped with hybrid drive systems and visually harmonized with the new electric design. On the visual side, the model, along with this silhouette, will have links with the rest of the range, primarily the ID models. Polo and ID. Cross.
An important change is also expected in the cabin of the vehicle, as it has already been announced that all future Volkswagen models, including the new Golf, will re-introduce physical controls for key functions. This primarily refers to the management of the air conditioning device and the volume of the multimedia system, thus responding to earlier criticisms of users related to exclusively digital interfaces. According to available information, the official launch of the new Golf generation is expected in 2028.
