YouTube is testing Auto Speed: AI independently speeds up the video

Platform YouTube is again experimenting with the way users consume content, introducing new features that could significantly change viewing habits. The latest test, available to YouTube Premium subscribers, includes the “Auto Speed” and “On-the-go” options, which together hint at a shift from passive viewing to optimized, algorithmically driven content consumption.

It is an experimental functionality that began to appear in late March and early April 2026, with the planned duration of the test until April 27, after which the company will decide whether to keep it or discard it.

What is “Auto Speed” and how does it work?

The most interesting novelty is “Auto Speed”, a function that automatically adjusts the playback speed during the video. Instead of the user manually selecting 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x, the system dynamically speeds up and slows down the content depending on its complexity.

In practice, this means that slower parts of the video will be sped up, while important or information-dense segments will remain closer to normal speed. The goal is simple – to save time without losing understanding of the content.

This approach is an evolution of already existing options for speed control, but with a key difference: the user is no longer the one who decides the pace, but the algorithm.

“On-the-go”: YouTube as a podcast platform

The second feature, “On-the-go”, focuses on the mobile experience. It introduces a simplified interface intended for users who listen to content on the go, while walking, driving or traveling.

When the phone detects motion, the app can automatically suggest switching to this mode, removing visual distractions and leaving only basic playback controls.

This move clearly shows that YouTube is increasingly targeting the podcast and audio content market, where it already competes with platforms like Spotify-a.

A limited experiment

The functions are currently only available to Premium users through the “Experimental features” section in the application, primarily on mobile devices.
