The new Opel Astra may be abandoning the classic shape, but the station wagon remains safe

Estates are quietly disappearing from the European market, but a few car manufacturers see them as an opportunity to stand out from the endless offer hatchback and SUVs. Opel, it seems, is one of them.

The current Astra, introduced in 2021 as a close relative of the Peugeot 308, should get a facelift along with it in late 2025 to keep up with rivals like the VW Golf and Toyota Corolla. However, its successor has already been confirmed, and announcements are coming from Opel that it will appear on the market before the end of this decade, probably around 2029.

Caravan as a priority

Since its first generation 35 years ago, the Astra has always offered body versions hatchbacka and station wagons, long after sedans, coupes and convertibles had dropped out of the lineup. It looks like the next generation could be the one to finally break that pattern, and it all starts with a shape that customers have always taken for granted.

In an interview with the media, the CEO of Opel, Florian Huettlwhen asked whether it should be compact hatchback to develop, he left the door wide open, but noted that “this does not necessarily mean that the new Astra will be traditional hatchback”. What was surprising was his determination about the station wagon version, known as the Sports Tourer.

“I can tell you that the wagon version will exist, because that’s what our home market in Germany is looking for, and that’s what we’re going to offer,” Huettl confirmed, revealing that interior spaciousness will be one of the key focuses of the next generation.

Against the competition

The move goes against the grain compared to what some of the main competitors are doing. For example, Hyundai has practically confirmed the end of the i30 Wagon, which we wrote about, redirecting its R&D money to higher-margin SUVs.

Opel’s decision is based on strong sales results in Germany, where the Astra recorded its highest market position in seven years in May 2024. Opel seems to see the future in meeting the needs of a loyal base of wagon buyers, offering them SUV-like practicality without compromising on vehicle height and fuel efficiency.
