Apple has introduced a new generation of MacBook Pro laptops, which come with brand new M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. The new models are available in versions with 14-inch and 16-inch screens and represent the most powerful laptops that Apple has produced so far.
The new chips use an improved unified architecture that integrates two chiplet designs into a single SoC chip. Apple says that the new CPU uses the fastest processing cores to date, while the GPU gets a new generation of graphics units with integrated accelerators for neural networks. Thanks to these improvements, AI performance can be up to four times higher compared to the previous generation.
M5 Pro and M5 Max bring a big leap in AI and graphics performance
Chip configurations look like this:
The M5 Pro brings up to 18 CPU cores and up to 20 GPU cores, with a maximum of 64 GB of integrated working memory with a data throughput of up to a maximum of 307 GB/s.
The M5 Max also uses 18 CPU cores, but the GPU goes up to 40 cores, with a maximum of 128 GB of combined memory and a maximum transfer rate of 614 GB/s.
MacBook Pro: faster SSD and more modern wireless connectivity
Apple states that the new MacBook Pro brings an SSD up to twice as fast as the previous generation. The standard configuration for models with the M5 Pro chip starts with 1 TB of storage space, while the models with the M5 Max chip start with 2 TB.
The new laptops also use Apple’s N1 controller for wireless connectivity, which brings support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, which enables more stable and faster wireless connections.
