Story behind How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) Series
Maximilian Schmidt from Leipzig made his fortune as a teenager by selling drugs online. He sent packages to customers by regular mail. It is the subject of a Netflix series and a documentary about his life.
Teenagers sell drugs online, this is the topic of Netflix’s multi-award-winning series How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast). The third season finished on July 27, 2021, with the “Everybody gets a second chance” episode. The authors were inspired by the true story of a young German dealer Maximilian Schmidt Netflix also made a documentary about him: “Shiny_Flakes: The Teenage Drug Lord”. It shows how Schmidt, as an 18-year-old in 2013, created a drug empire that he ruled from his room. His family had no idea about it. “At first I was nervous,” he says in the film, recalling that he was afraid that the police would suddenly break into their house.
German director Eva Müller followed Schmidt for several years. Her team made a faithful copy of the room from his childhood. For the purposes of the film, he staged former interviews and prepared to send a pink pill (“candy”). The author had interviews with him, his lawyer, the prison warden, the state’s attorney, and a psychologist.

According to media reports, Schmidt sold more than 900 kilograms of hashish, cocaine, LSD, and prescription drugs in just over a year. He sent packages by mail to the whole world, and the postmen who had no idea actually served him as couriers. It was a professional business, the goods were paid for in advance. And then he sent packages “only”, as he says, “instead of shoes there were drugs in them”.
He has in a way become a kind of all kinds of drugs, his lawyer, Stefan Costabel states in the film. Schmidt even got customer ratings and reviews, one of which he read aloud in the film: “I just lost two teeth, this thing really totally pisses you off.” Schmidt laughed contentedly.
In one scene Eva Müller asks him if he ever had a guilty conscience because he supported people’s drug addiction. The answer was: no; if people didn’t buy drugs from him, they would buy them from someone else. And customers could easily find it through Google’s search engine. That was “crazy in a positive way” for him.
German media write that the police found him by following the trail of several packages that were not delivered. Schmidt was arrested in February 2015, at his family’s apartment in Leipzig. There they found 320 kilograms of drugs worth several million euros. Schmidt was then 20 years old and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was released after four years.
According to the latest information, he later continued to sell drugs, but no longer as a “soloist”.
