Days Gone – a biker trip in Oregon

Seven years ago today, the PlayStation exclusive Days Gone was launched, which sent us on a motorcycle ride through Oregon during the zombie apocalypse.

In the PlayStation 4 era, Sony continued series such as Uncharted and The Last of Us, brought back old hits such as Ratchet & Clank and Shadow of the Colossus, but also introduced a whole series of new franchises such as Death Stranding, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone. This latter title appeared on this day in 2019.

Days Gone was a creation of Sony’s Bend studio. The producer of the former Syphon Filter worked on games for the PSP and PS Vita until 2012, and then they tackled a big project – an action adventure in an open world. The zombie invasion wasn’t an original thing in 2019, but Days Gone managed to draw attention to itself by bringing the so-called great hordes Freakerwho were apparently runners in a past life. Up to 500 zombies could be found in hordes, which was a terrifying sight.

At a time when Sony’s exclusives were receiving high ratings, Days Gone was an exception. Unlike other exclusives that came out in good shape, Days Gone was a technical mess before the Day 1 update and had to be patched up with several patches. It was one of the few Sony games that didn’t use internals at the time engine than Unreal Engine 4, which was also seen in frequent loading and unstable performance. In addition to the update, this was also helped by the PlayStation 5, on which the game runs at 60 frames per second.

Sales figures for this game have never been made public. It is known that the game was played more than five million playersand that was before it appeared on the PC platform. However, the management of Sony Bend Studios left their positions after Sony refused to give the green light to make a sequel. According to rumors, Days Gone lost support after former president Shawn Layden left Sony.

A movie adaptation of this game was mentioned for a while, but nothing is known about it at the moment. The last activity related to Days Gone was seen in 2025, when the game received its remaster for PC and PlayStation 5, with improved graphics and some new content.
