Electric Car Maintenance Costs vs Gas

Service technicians spend twice as much time diagnosing problems on electric cars than on gas-powered cars.

One of the selling points of electric cars is their supposedly low maintenance costs. The complexity of petrol and diesel engines with many moving engine parts, catalysts, pumps, pipe chargers…, all this requires more working hours and parts.

However, one is projections as it should be, and the other is reality.

Maintaining electric cars is significantly more expensive in the first few months than servicing cars with internal combustion engines.

In the first three months, the costs are about 2.3 times higher, and after a year, the maintenance of EV is 1.6 times more expensive. This is the result of the American We Predict analysis, based on 19 million cars of the 2016 – 2021 model years.

We Predict website sees the cause of this phenomenon in new technology, which is still unknown to many.

Namely, service technicians spend twice as much time diagnosing problems on electric vehicles than on cars with gasoline engines, and repairs take 1.5 times longer.

However, there are still big differences between manufacturers.

After three months of operation, service costs for electric cars are: the Ford Mustang Mach-E was $93 per vehicle, well below the cost of the next competitor, the Audi E-Tron, at $366 per vehicle.

At Porsche Taycan it is $667 per vehicle, while at Jaguar I-Pace the price is $834 per car.
