Expert in computer vision and robotics, Stiven Čenghas constructed a Laser AI system that uses deep learning to neutralize mosquitoes. Cheng described this project as the ultimate mosquito killerturning a common household nuisance into a serious engineering challenge.

The basis of the system is a visual model that Cheng trained using his own database. To photograph insects, he used a DSLR camera with a high zoom lens. The same camera system later serves as the main sensor for detecting mosquitoes in space.

Cheng noted that the process of collecting this data cost him countless bites all over his body, a reminder that even high-tech projects sometimes require direct contact with the real world. The collected photos were then manually labeled and used to train a model that recognizes mosquitoes in flight. As he states, the data processing process seriously strained his graphics card. Nevertheless, the recognition accuracy was at a high level in the end.

Automatic aiming and safety system

After successfully solving the detection problem, the engineer integrated a laser calibrated to fry a mosquito in seconds. The laser is mounted on a high-precision industrial rotary stand, which allows it to move quickly and precisely following the target assigned to it by the computer vision system.

The system functions in a so-called closed loop. The camera identifies the insect, the AI ​​confirms it’s a mosquito, and the hardware adjusts, targets and activates the laser in real time. Unlike classic electric traps that use passive attraction of insects with light, this system actively tracks and attacks individual targets.

To prevent unwanted incidents, Cheng installed a second, wide-angle camera. Its only task is to detect the presence of people or flammable materials in the environment. If the system detects that a person or a sensitive object is in the line of fire or close to the target, the laser is instantly deactivated.

Results and the future of DIY robotics

After assembly and testing, Cheng put the laser AI system to work inside his home. According to him, after only one night of work, all mosquitoes in the house were successfully eliminated.

Although this project is experimental, it demonstrates in an excellent way how modern enthusiasts can combine commercially available hardware with advanced robotic techniques.
