Miami Art Week served as the perfect stage for McLaren to present its latest unique project. As reported by Carscoops, it is a 750S Spider called Project Chromology, created through the collaboration of the Special Operations Department (MSO) and a British artist. Nat Bowen. The result is a car that blurs the lines between the automotive industry and high art.
Namely, Bowen is an abstract artist known for her vivid artworks based on resin and the study of chromology, i.e. the psychology of colors. In collaboration with McLaren, she developed a multi-layer painting technique that transfers the distinctive characteristics of her art to the automotive finish.
The resulting design, called Chromatic Layered Finish, is truly eye-catching. Multiple transparent layers of paint allow light to penetrate through them, revealing shifting depth and tonal movements. What is particularly interesting is the subtle, raised texture within the surface of the paint itself, creating a sense of dimensionality that can be both seen and felt.
The presented example wears a tricolor exterior that combines bright green, light blue and dark blue colors. Where these colors meet, an interesting circular interaction is created that reveals new shades and shadings, giving the car a dynamic look from every angle.
In addition to the unique color, Project Chromology also brings 24-carat gold-plated markings. To ensure that these luxury details do not distract from the main design, the background of each badge is matched to the body color of that area, achieving a cohesive and elegant look.
The interior follows the style of the exterior, with black Alcantara seats that have contrasting gold accents. They are joined by blue details on the steering wheel and carbon fiber elements. A closer look reveals additional gold detailing and a special “McLaren Nat Bowen” badge with a “squeezing” color effect, which further emphasizes the artistic nature of the vehicle.
Unlike some previous art cars that were only one-off showpieces, the Project Chromology 750S is entering limited series production for a select group of clients.
Each example will have a unique color scheme inspired by themes from the artist Bowen’s oeuvre, and in addition, each customer will receive an original artwork created by the artist herself, making both the car and the painting true collector’s items.
