Audi is preparing a brand new A4 for next year, which will be equipped with a hybrid drivetrain, will have a redesigned design and a new interior. The car was photographed under camouflage in Avant form during winter tests in Sweden.

In addition to design changes to the body and cab, the next A4 will undergo significant technological changes. The model will continue to use the current MLB platform, but will get a new series of SUS engines, as well as an electrified option. Audi’s chief technical officer, Oliver Hoffman, said the engines to be used by the future four were “the best this company has ever made”.

Most powertrains will be based on the refreshed EA888 engine variant, which is very common in the Volkswagen Group. It is a two-liter turbo gasoline, which will now have a better response to gas and a fuel injection system under higher pressure.

The petrol engine will be combined with mild hybrid technology running at 48V, and the more expensive variants will have a complete plug-in hybrid drive. This version is expected to use a 14.4kWh battery like other models on the MLB platform, such as the Audi Q5. The diesel engine will be kept on offer, and it is expected to be a two-liter four-cylinder unit from the Q5 SUV.
For now, there is no confirmation that Audi will offer a fully electric version of the A4. If that happens, the model would have to switch to another platform, as the MLB architecture is not designed for electric drives.
