Tesla is retiring its RWD Cybertruck Long Range model due to brake failure. Believe it or not, faulty brake rotors can cause the wheels to fall off the vehicle. The problem was first noticed by the portal MotorTrend. The matter became serious and much more well-known when the news was published on the website of the American agency NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
Company report Tesla states that the brake rotor holes can crack. This allows the spokes to separate from the wheel hub.
Tesla recall details and affected models
The recall covers all 173 RWD Cybertruck Long Range models sold by Tesla. These cars start at $70,000 and come with 18-inch steel wheels from the factory. So far, the company has identified at least three complaints that are potentially related to this failure. However, so far there are no reports of crashes or injuries.
This is the eleventh Cybertruck recall to date. Previous problems included the gas pedal, inverter and reversing cameras. Tesla launched the RWD Cybertruck last April, but soon pulled it from sale. The new, less expensive $60,000 AWD model is not affected by this problem.
The cause of the failure and the solution to the problem
On affected vehicles, loads from turning or going over bumps can stress the rotor openings. This leads to the creation of cracks that spread over time. If the crack widens, the belt can completely separate from the hub.
Tesla has announced that it will replace the brake rotors on all recalled vehicles free of charge. Also, wheel hubs and nuts will be replaced. Owners will be notified to schedule service at the company’s expense.
