Tesla records an annual sales decline of 9%, BYD has overtaken them globally

The end of 2025 brought a change at the top of the list of the world’s largest electric car manufacturers, and it became clear when the biggest players, Tesla and BYD, announced their annual sales results. The decline in Tesla continues, so in the last quarter of the year even 25% fewer cars were sold than in the same quarter of 2024, a little more than 418,000 of them. On an annual basis, Tesla produced and sold just over 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, ending the year with a 9% drop in shipments, compared to sales of around 1.79 million vehicles in 2024.

On the other side of the world, China’s BYD is taking off. In 2024, they sold a total of 1.7 million electric cars, and by 2025, they would have significantly increased their sales to 2.25 million – thus taking over the crown of the largest manufacturer from Tesla. If you include BYD’s other electrified vehicles, this manufacturer delivered as many as 4.6 million cars in the world during the past 12 months.

When it comes to Europe, Tesla’s sales decline on our continent coincided with Musk’s involvement in politics, and at the same time, BYD began to aggressively expand its sales network. European buyers have begun to slowly accept Chinese electric cars and see their technological advantages and lower prices, even despite the tariffs introduced earlier last year.

The rise of BYD was visible throughout last year, so April was already the first month in which they sold more cars than Tesla on the European market.
