Musk announced that Tesla had conquered the process of mass production of batteries with dry electrodes

Tesla achieved a major breakthrough in lithium battery production technology, which Elon Musk described as an extraordinary achievement. Musk stated on the X network that the mass application of the dry electrode process is one of the biggest challenges in the production of lithium batteries, but also one of the most significant technological advances. On this occasion, he congratulated Tesla’s engineering, manufacturing and supply chain teams, as well as strategic suppliers, for achieving this result.

According to available information, the new technology enables a significant reduction in battery production costs, lower energy consumption and simplification of factory processes, with the possibility of a rapid increase in production capacity.

Dry electrodes represent a more advanced technology for the production of lithium batteries, the key advantage of which is the elimination of liquid solvents from the production process. In the classic production of lithium batteries, chemical solvents are used that are mixed with the active materials of the electrodes in order to obtain a paste that is then applied to the substrate. This is followed by an energy-intensive process of drying and solvent recovery, which increases costs, complicates production and carries environmental risks.

Tesla introduces dry electrodes into mass production

With dry electrode technology, liquid solvents are not used at all. The dry powder of the active electrode material is directly formed into thin electrode sheets by a process similar to pressing. In this way, the production process is significantly simplified, energy consumption and pollution are reduced, and at the same time, greater electrode thickness and greater energy storage capacity are enabled.

Mass production of batteries with dry electrodes is of great importance both for Tesla and for end users. An additional reduction in the cost of manufacturing batteries and thus their cheaper price, significantly lower investments in the construction of factories, as well as a reduction in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 40 to 50 percent are expected.

For consumers, the biggest advantage is reflected in the increased range of electric vehicles. The energy storage capacity of dry electrodes can be increased by about 20 percent, which directly affects the extension of vehicle autonomy. Type 4680 batteries that use this technology have already been used in certain versions of the Model Y, and the production of these vehicles is gradually returning to a normal rhythm.

From the aspect of industrial development, this technological breakthrough has a wider significance. The introduction of dry electrodes removes the key limitations of traditional lithium battery production and permanently solves the problem of pollution caused by solvents.

In addition, the dry electrode technology shows a high degree of compatibility with future battery generations, and allows Tesla to reduce its dependence on the external supply chain. Industry experts estimate that this move will accelerate the wider application of dry electrodes and encourage further development of electric vehicles and energy storage systems towards lower costs, greater efficiency and greater range.
