The Mercedes A class remains, but returns as a fully electric model by 2029.

It looks like the Mercedes A-Class is staying with us for the foreseeable future, just not in its current form. Despite initial speculation that the model will be discontinued as part of Mercedes’ consolidation of the offer, a replacement for the existing model could very easily be realized, but as a fully electric vehicle.

Although official plans have not yet been released, in an interview with the design director Robertom Lesnikomthe Auto Express portal obtained information that the new hatchback likely to arrive near the end of this decade as an electric model. Current expectations suggest that the next-generation model could debut around 2029, after the existing A-Class finishes its extended production run that should last until 2028.

New architecture as a foundation

In order to meet the needs of the next-generation A-Class, Mercedes intends to transfer the production of the current model to the factory in Hungary during the next year. Lesnik stated that the production line will not require significant revision to meet the specific requirements of the new MMA platform. Mercedes is focusing on expanding the versatility of the MMA platform to deliver advanced EV technology, innovative design and cost efficiency.

In addition, the MMA platform gives the company the flexibility to install the same all-electric powertrain as well as a hybrid unit as in the CLA model, which will also form the basis for the new A-Class. Mercedes developed this hybrid system to meet the strict Euro 7 emissions standards that are due to come into effect by 2027.

When Mercedes first unveiled its compact MMA lineup in 2023, it planned four models: the CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB. Lesnik indicated that the electric A class would actually become the fifth model in that family.

A-klasa, a ne EQA

Mercedes decided that their somewhat confusing decision to spin off EV models under their own “EQ” brand wasn’t the best way forward. Because of this, the A Class name will likely remain instead of the EQA name, which will simplify the overall offering.

Lesnik also confirmed that the A-Class will remain stylishly appealing, with “cab-back” approach to the design, as opposed to the original upright shape that graced the A-Class in the 1990s. The design is also expected to eschew the aerodynamic styling seen on models like the EQE and EQS and instead follow the CLA’s proportions with a longer bonnet and a more traditional hatchback profile.
