Designed by ChatGPT and built by a YouTuber – a functional four-cylinder engine

Today, it has already become routine for various programming or text tasks, creating images or videos and looking for advice to ask AI, but few would think of or dare to use one. chatbot embark on the adventure of making a functional internal combustion engine. That’s exactly what came to mind for the Filipino behind the YouTube channel Let’s Learn Something.

From AI concept to reality

His project began as ChatGPT’s conceptual rendering of a “Square Four” engine (with four cylinders arranged in a square formation), whose seemingly impossible design required in-depth engineering planning to realize in the real world. The realization process included a number of demanding stages, starting with the detailed design of the crankshaft and the distribution system driven by the chain. In order to ensure the precision and stability of operation in the square arrangement of cylinders, numerous custom parts are machined.

For these purposes, the creator acquired four discarded vintage engine cases, cylinder heads and other parts and meticulously cleaned and machined them to match the precise specifications generated by the software. Using his skill and knowledge, he finally combined the scrap parts into one unified engine block.

A series of technical challenges

Among the key components, a custom stainless steel intake manifold stands out, the production of which required advanced manufacturing technologies and high precision to achieve optimal fuel mixing and flow. The most difficult part of the entire project was installing the four-speed transmission and drivetrain gears.

During the final phase of the project, extensive testing and solving of accompanying engineering problems accompanying the transition from a two-dimensional computer creation to an actual mechanical assembly were carried out. The moment of truth came when the oil and fuel entered the system. The engineer ran the custom engine and manually adjusted the vacuum, ignition and air intake to maintain a stable idle. Without the exhaust, the engine was violently loud inside the workshop, giving the impression of an unpolished and raw, but fully functional machine.
