Volkswagen’s new e-bikes use automotive technology for greater safety

In partnership with premium e-bike manufacturer n+, Volkswagen has introduced an innovative line of electric bikes that, instead of focusing on more powerful motors and larger batteries, prioritizes advanced safety features. The goal is clear – to make cyclists more visible and aware of their surroundings, using technology previously reserved for cars.

Smart View system and smart lights

Central to this safety ecosystem is the Smart View system, which combines an integrated high-definition rear camera with radar-based traffic monitoring. There is a screen on the steering wheel that shows the image from the camera mounted on the rear fender in real time. This allows the driver to see what is happening behind him without having to turn his head, which is a common cause of loss of balance and accidents.

At the same time, radar sensors, similar to those offered by Garmin, constantly scan the environment and warn the cyclist of approaching vehicles in his blind spot. This technology is very similar to the camera and mirror systems that are becoming standard in modern cars and could represent one of the most significant safety advances in the e-bike market in recent years.

In order to further increase visibility, Volkswagen and n+ have developed an innovative lighting system. An LED strip runs through the entire top tube of the frame, which functions as a car daytime running light. But her role does not stop there. When braking, the strip lights up in red, and when turning in amber, clearly signaling the cyclist’s intentions to other road users.

A connected ecosystem for complete protection

The safety package is rounded off with additional smart equipment. The optional smart helmet synchronizes with the bike via Bluetooth and mirrors its light signals, which further increases the rider’s visibility. The helmet is also equipped with an accelerometer that can detect a fall or crash and automatically send an SMS message with the location to predefined emergency contacts.

Probably the most futuristic piece of equipment are the smart glasses. They are inspired head-up displays (HUD) in cars, and were developed by engineers with experience in creating displays for fighter pilot helmets. The glasses project key information directly into the driver’s field of vision, such as navigation instructions, blind spot warnings and driving data such as speed and distance traveled. In this way, the cyclist can keep his eyes on the road and at the same time have access to all important information.

Despite the built-in advanced technology, the price of these bikes is competitive with the premium models on the market. The Sport model, which includes a Smart View monitor, starts with a price of around 3,700 euros. A smart helmet and smart glasses are available as accessories, each costing around 620 euros.
