A new generation of humanoid helpers in another BMW facility

The BMW Group has announced that it is intensifying digitization and the application of artificial intelligence in its production processes by introducing so-called physical (embodied) artificial intelligence, which connects digital systems with real machines and robots. After a successful pilot project with the Figure 02 humanoid robot at the factory in Spartanburg, USA, and the AEON robot in Leipzig, the company is starting work with its more advanced successor called Figure 03. This new model will be integrated into real production processes, with a primary focus on complex logistics tasks.

In cooperation with the technology company Figure AI, the previous model Figure 02 supported the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles during ten months of operation in the body shop. There, the robot successfully inserted sheet metal parts for the welding process, a task that requires high speed and accuracy and is physically demanding work for humans. This proved that humanoid robots can safely perform precise and repeatable steps in real factory conditions.

A new generation of robots

The new Figure 03 model brings several advanced technical features that enable wider application in the plant. The robot is equipped with soft components for greater safety, a wireless charging system for better accessibility, and audio functions for direct voice communication. In addition, it has improved hands with tactile sensors and cameras on the palms, which significantly increases precision and dexterity when handling.

In the new logistics task, Figure 03 will take unsorted parts from large containers and stack them in sequencing carts, which are then transported to the assembly line where they are delivered to workers exactly in the order of installation. The main goal of introducing this technology is to protect employees and use their potential as efficiently as possible, while at the same time continuously improving working conditions at workplaces, BMW says.

This project is closely related to the overall digital transformation of the factory in Spartanburg, where the just-announced electrified BMW iX5 will also be assembled. Artificial intelligence in this factory also plays a key role in ensuring quality, but also in process optimization and error elimination. For example, the AIQX (Artificial Intelligence Quality Next) quality control system provides line workers with instant feedback via smart devices, and BMW is currently evaluating options to make it available to its suppliers as well.
