Without going into whether you should buy the iPhone 14 or not, and whether it’s better than an Android phone, Apple introduced many revolutionary things (according to their beliefs) with with its new generation of phones. To say that something already seen on Android phones from 7 years ago is revolutionary is a bit pretentious, but still, Apple can take some technology and arrange it much better than the original.
Let’s deal with the “newspaper”. There are ProRAW mode, Dynamic Island, AlwaysOn display and much more.
Always On
Samsung introduced the AlwaysOn display to its Galaxy Note series with the Note 7 model in 2016. On the lock screen, you could see the time, notifications, or calendar. This has been adopted by other manufacturers who have used this extremely useful option for years.
On the other hand, the Apple AlwaysOn display is a little more dynamic than the solutions offered by Samsung and other manufacturers and allows for significantly more customization options, and you can also change configurations and what is displayed on the screen. It’s not new, but it’s changed enough, yet Apple users have been waiting for AOD for more than five years.
Dynamic refresh
This isn’t a new option either, and we’ve seen dynamic refresh of 90 and 120 Hz on 300-euro Android phones. Apple has maintained that only those who pay for the Pro models can get refresh rates higher than the standard 60 Hz. The novelty is the LTPO matrix, which on the new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models allows the refresh rate to drop to just 1 Hz, which is a shift compared to the minimum 24 Hz of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models.
Collision detection
Another revolutionary option. It doesn’t really matter who introduced the collision detection option first, because it is a really useful option. In addition to the Apple iPhone 14 series, Google introduced collision detection within the Personal Safety application on its Pixel phones a few years ago.
Like the Apple implementation, there is an option that allows you to text/call 911 and share your location data when a crash occurs. Of course, if you don’t do it yourself, after a certain time, the Pixel will automatically call 192. It’s not a new option, but it’s very useful.
ProRAW
With its 102 MP camera, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offered the option of shooting in RAW format, and other phones for years have had the option of shooting without compression, when you need to adjust some photos later in the software. Even the recently tested Motorola Edge 30 Ultra had that same option on the 200 MP sensor.
The iPhone 14 Pro series uses ProRAW by shooting at the full resolution of the 48 MP sensor, rather than stitching together the adjacent pixels, allowing the sensor to shine. Of course, this also means less light in the frame and a narrower dynamic range, but at least you have the RAW option.
A dynamic island
Apple has replaced the notch on its iPhone 14 Pro phones with a serious slit in the middle that it calls Dynamic Island. It is a software adjustment of the options that are displayed around that part of the screen. Whether it’s notifications, messages or managing the songs that are playing, Apple has done a good job. We should also not forget the fact that frequent interaction with this part will leave the lens of the front camera stained, which you should not forget when you want to take a selfie.
Android solved it by enabling various notifications around the camera itself, but we have to admit that Apple’s solution is more attractive. On the other hand, we cannot escape the impression that we have seen this, or at least a similar option on to the LG V10 phone from 2016, which had a separate screen above the main screen, which extended the area next to the cameras, allowing notifications, apps and more on it.
Admittedly, Apple has done it far more elegantly, although the option is not new.
