Audi Sport presented the RS 5: The first hybrid model with quattro drive

After the first details leaked to the public earlier this week, Audi Sport officially presented the new RS 5 in Ingolstadt, the first high-performance plug-in hybrid in the history of that subsidiary. The model combines a V6 Biturbo engine and an electric motor, which achieves a total output power of as much as 639 hp. In addition to an optional top speed of 285 km/h, the RS 5 also offers a practical side with a range of over 80 kilometers purely on electric power, which makes it adaptable for city driving and sports tracks.

Innovative drive

The heart of the new Audi RS 5 is an advanced 2.9-liter TFSI V6 Biturbo engine that develops 375 kW (510 hp), which is a significant jump of 44 kW compared to its predecessor. This petrol uses a modified Miller combustion cycle and variable turbine geometry for instant response without lag. Efficiency is raised to a new level with an optimized intake and cooling system, which reduces fuel consumption under heavy load by as much as 20%.

A powerful electric motor with a power of 130 kW (177 hp) is attached to the drive unit, integrated directly into the eight-speed gearbox. Together, they deliver a system power of 470 kW (639 hp) and as much as 825 Nm of torque. Thanks to the electric support, the RS 5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, while the battery with a net capacity of 22 kWh enables up to 87 kilometers of city driving without emissions.

The electric motor here is not only responsible for acceleration, but plays a key role in the new Dynamic Torque Control system, sending energy to the torque distribution unit on the rear axle. The RS 5 also has a new differential that adjusts the torque between the wheels every five milliseconds through electromechanical distribution. Such precision, according to the manufacturer, ensures unprecedented agility and stability, while the central self-locking differential takes care of the constant transmission of power to all wheels.

The design of the electric motor with an external rotor enables better cooling and greater efficiency in all driving modes. The system eliminates the need for a classic starter, ensuring flawless spontaneity with every press of the gas pedal.

The battery located under the trunk uses advanced cell chemistry that guarantees high performance even at extreme temperatures. Via a three-phase 11 kW AC charger, the system is charged to full capacity in just 2.5 hours. A special feature is the sports driving modes that maintain the charge at 90% with active cooling at an optimal 20°C, ensuring the driver constant access to maximum power at all times.

Sports design

The visual identity of the new RS 5 remains true to its sporting heritage, but with an emphasis on robustness. The body has been extended by approximately nine centimeters compared to the standard A5 model, which, along with the characteristic wheel arch extensions and three-dimensional honeycomb radiator grille, leaves a strong impression on the road. A recognizable signature is provided by the tinted matrix LED headlights with a digital checkered flag pattern, while the rear part is dominated by an aerodynamic diffuser with oval ends of the RS sports exhaust system.

The interior of the vehicle follows the exterior aggressiveness with the introduction of luxurious details such as contrasting stitching in Serpentine green. The technological focus is on the new 14.5-inch MMI touch screen, which allows drivers to analyze routes in detail, measure the timing of sectors on race tracks, and track the angle of drift through RS torque rear system. The RS sport suspension with two-chamber shock absorbers that reduce body roll without sacrificing comfort is in charge of power control.
