The Chinese car market has become one of the most important for the development of electrified vehicles in recent years, and the latest regulatory changes could further complicate the position for European manufacturers. Namely, at the beginning of the year, China significantly tightened the conditions that plug-in hybrids must meet in order to obtain tax breaks and other benefits.
Under the new rules, a plug-in hybrid must now have an electric range of at least 100 kilometers to qualify for tax benefits. The earlier threshold was 43 kilometers, which for years corresponded to most European models.
Such a change will benefit domestic manufacturers who in recent years have been developing plug-in hybrids with large batteries and significantly greater electric range. While many Chinese models today can travel more than 100 miles on electricity alone, many European competitors still rely on smaller batteries and a shorter electric range.
In addition, an additional challenge is the fact that the Chinese authorities have tightened the requirements for fuel consumption when the vehicle is driven exclusively with the help of an internal combustion engine. This especially affects models that use larger and more powerful gasoline engines.
The consequences are already visible in the market. According to Automotive News, manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Land Rover have significantly reduced or almost completely canceled the offer of plug-in hybrids in China because certain models no longer meet the conditions for obtaining incentives.
On the other hand, Chinese manufacturers continue to expand the range of electric range vehicles, and some of these models are already arriving on the European market. Analysts therefore warn that the trend that has taken hold in China could soon increase the pressure on European manufacturers as well, who will have to adapt their plug-in hybrids to new customer expectations.
