Mercedes-Benz has revealed that in 227 S-Class and EQS models, several functions and applications can be used while driving. As the MBUX system was not intended to function in this way, Mercedes offered the owners to make a correction.
According to a document of the American Traffic Safety Administration / NHTSA /, Mercedes launched an investigation in November 2021, after it was discovered on an internal vehicle in Germany that certain MBUX functions and applications were not deactivated while driving, as it should be.
The investigation established that there are incorrect configurations on some servers in Mercedes-Benz and that it is possible that they were installed in vehicles with active and connected Mercedes me connect accounts. This situation poses a potential safety risk – not only for the driver who decides to use certain applications while driving, but also for other road users. The risk is particularly increased in the EQS model with its huge MBUX hyperecreen that extends across the entire center console and on which active applications are certainly a distraction.
In the same way that the problem reached the vehicles – via the Internet connection – it will be eliminated, so the owners will not have to stop by the services. Mercedes said it was not aware that at least one collision or injury had occurred as a result of this error.
A similar situation was recently discovered in Tesla’s cars, so NHTSA contacted the company about the latest software update that allowed passengers (and potentially the driver) to play video games on the central screen. The discussion on this situation is still ongoing.
