The City of Zagreb has launched a public procurement procedure for the creation of the Traffic Portal, a unique digital platform intended for the collection, analysis and exchange of data on traffic conditions. The project, whose estimated value is three million euros without VAT, includes the development of a system that will integrate information from different sources, including road sensors, cameras and public transport systems. In addition to motorized traffic, the platform will also include data on the movement of cyclists and pedestrians.
Modernization of infrastructure
The main goal of this undertaking is to create a complete picture of traffic flows in the city. “The development of a comprehensive Traffic Portal represents a strategic step towards the modernization of the city’s infrastructure and the improvement of the quality of life of citizens,” said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević. The planned deadline for the implementation of the entire project is nine months, which should give Zagreb an advanced tool for informed decision-making in urban mobility management.
For the general public, the most significant part of the project is the development of the user interface, i.e. public access to data via the website and mobile application. For the first time, citizens will be able to monitor road conditions in one place, watch video transmissions from key intersections in real time, and receive information on temporary traffic regulations. The application will also enable the reporting of traffic problems and the use of various e-services related to city transport and parking.
In addition to digital solutions, the project foresees physical infrastructure on the roads themselves. Installation of variable traffic signs is planned at 16 locations in the city, which will provide drivers with timely information without the need to use mobile devices while driving. This is planned to increase safety and enable drivers to react more quickly to unforeseen situations or traffic jams.
Integration with existing services
The new Traffic Portal will function as an additional module of the existing Traffic Management Center. The system will be fully integrated with the Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET), public bicycle systems and national data exchange access points. Such connectivity will enable city officials to perform advanced simulations of different traffic scenarios and more precisely analyze the effectiveness of current regulation.
