DLSS 5 is announced, Nvidia promises cinematic graphics and the biggest jump in quality in eight years


Nvidia today announced a new version of its DLSS technology that promises an unprecedented level of photorealistic graphics.

It’s only been a few months since Nvidia launched DLSS version 4.5, and here they are already announcing DLSS 5. However, the announcement isn’t just a casual one, as DLSS 5 brings something we haven’t seen before – a real-time neural rendering model that renders pixels with photorealistic lighting and materials.

In translation – a generative AI model that will actively “beautify” the game based on analyzing each of her shots.

Nvidia calls this method the most significant advance in computer graphics since the introduction of raytracing eight years ago. They promise a new level of graphics that could previously only be achieved with the visual effects of a Hollywood production.

Nvidia explains DLSS 5 as follows:

“The AI model is trained from start to finish to understand the complex semantics of a scene, such as characters, hair, fabric, and translucent skin, along with environmental lighting conditions, such as front light, backlight, or cloudy conditions—all by analyzing just one frame. DLSS 5 then uses that in-depth understanding to generate visually accurate images that properly handle complex elements like light scattering through skin, the soft glow of fabric, and light-material interactions on hair, while maintaining structure and semantics of the original scene.”

In doing so, developers should have control over what is used and in what way:

“DLSS 5 gives the development team detailed controls over intensity, color correction, and masking, so artists can determine where and how enhancements are applied to preserve each game’s unique aesthetic.”

According to the first examples of DLSS 5 in action, the difference in certain segments of the display is very drastic. To the extent that we are talking about characters that look totally different with DLSS 5 – almost as if they belong to some future time remaster. As things seem at first, DLSS 5 turns lifeless characters into realistic people.

Now, this whole thing acts as a sort of “filter”, which it essentially is. The scenes chosen by Nvidia for the demonstration are mostly static, and before we call this the future of graphics, we need to see how it will perform and whether it will bring any unexpected artifacts. After all, Nvidia hasn’t even said what kind of hardware we’ll need for this.
