Chinese automaker Geely has introduced a significant step forward in vehicle control through a new, internally developed power unit, demonstrated on the EX5 electric crossover prototype. The published video shows a system in which electric motors are integrated directly into the wheels, which enables much more flexible movement compared to classic drive solutions.
The basis is a modular drive unit designed for advanced maneuvers at low speeds and non-standard steering angles. During the demonstration, the vehicle was controlled using a special glove, which enables remote control. Geely states that this is a temporary solution, while in the future it is planned to switch to control via smartphones or smart watches, so that users can precisely move the vehicle in a confined space.
Independent wheels turn the Geely jeep in place
On the prototype, four independent drive units are installed directly in the wheels, each of which can rotate up to 90 degrees. Such a configuration allows each wheel to simultaneously steer and propel the vehicle, achieving exceptional maneuverability. Geely EX5 in this version can turn in place, move laterally and park in extremely narrow spaces, and then get out of them without classic maneuvering.
The front and rear axles can work in different directions at the same time, which enables precise movement in urban environments. The system also supports the so-called “crab” driving mode, where the vehicle moves sideways without changing its orientation. According to Geely, independent control of each wheel can further improve stability on slippery surfaces and strong side gusts of wind.
The new technology also has certain compromises. The rear wheel arches on the prototype have been widened to allow the rims to rotate 90 degrees, which can reduce interior space. According to CarNewsChina, the rear seats may have been completely removed, indicating the adjustments required to install such a system.
Geely EX5 is otherwise positioned as an important part of the strategy of expanding to global markets. The serial version uses one electric motor on the front axle with a power of 160 kW and a battery with a capacity of 60.2 kWh, with a declared WLTP range of about 430 kilometers, which makes it suitable for both city and longer drives.
