The once famous model from Volkswagen’s range, the Jetta, is presented in Asia as an independent brand within the group. At the Beijing Auto Show this week, they presented the Jetta X Concept, an electric vehicle that heralds a new era for the brand, previously known only for internal combustion models. Instead of the classic sedan that the global market is used to, Concept X brings the form of a robust SUV, popular in markets around the world.
Modern and “boxy”
The design is characterized by the “Modern Robust” language, which is manifested in a “cubic” silhouette, short overhangs and muscular lines, typical of the dedicated platform intended for electric models, which it shares with the other brands of the group.
The front part of the vehicle is adorned with split lights with “X” light elements, which directly correlates with the model name, while the closed grille emphasizes its electric character. The complete absence of the Volkswagen logo is also interesting, so the vehicle bears only the Jetta brand markings, which further emphasizes its independence within the group.
Digitization of the interior
The interior of the Jetta X concept is focused on high technology and a minimalist approach. The interior is dominated by a large central touchscreen, while a separate, smaller screen is intended for the passenger. The digital cockpit almost completely eliminates physical buttons, relying on advanced voice control and intelligent connectivity systems – therefore, the Jetta goes in a completely opposite direction to the one taken by Volkswagen with the new ID.3 Neo model and announced for the new European models.

The vehicle is equipped with the “China Electronic Architecture” system, which enables advanced digital services, updates via the Internet and artificial intelligence support in driving, thus positioning the Jetta as a technological leader in the entry segment and competing with highly digitized Chinese models.
A strategic turn
The presentation of the Jetta X Concept marks a key moment in the transformation of the brand, which has operated as a joint venture between FAW and Volkswagen since 2019. From 2026, Jetta will operate as a fully independent entity with a focus on new energy vehicles, including all-electric models and plug-in hybrids. Five new models are planned to be launched by 2028, four of which will be “new energy” models.
This move is interpreted as a strategic response of the Volkswagen Group to the changes in the Chinese market after the withdrawal of Škoda. Jetta takes on the role of an entry-level brand, aiming for annual sales of 400,000 to 500,000 units. The first serial model based on this concept is expected on the market at the end of this year, which will begin the offensive by which the German concern seeks to defend its market share in the segment of affordable electric vehicles – namely, the first information indicates that this crossover could cost less than (calculated) 13,000 euros in China!
