The model takes advanced programming capabilities from the GPT‑5.3‑Codex model, but with better management of software environments and tools.

Within the ChatGPT platform, a new version called GPT-5.4 Thinking can display a thinking plan before completing a response. In this way, the user can adjust the direction of the answer during the process and get a result that is more precisely aligned with the request.
The model also significantly improves deep web browsing, especially for very specific queries, while better maintaining context during longer and more complex queries.
Within the Codex platform and API environment, GPT-5.4 becomes OpenAI’s first general model with advanced computing capabilities. This enables so-called agents to use applications, execute complex work processes and manage tasks across multiple software tools.
The model supports the context of up to a million tokens, which enables the processing of very long documents and complex work processes. In addition, a tool search system was introduced to help agents find appropriate software connectors and functions.
OpenAI states that GPT-5.4 uses significantly fewer tokens to solve problems compared to its predecessor GPT‑5.2, resulting in faster responses and lower usage costs.
