The Last of Us multiplayer game was canceled a day before it was supposed to be publicly presented


The director of the canceled multiplayer game in the world of The Last of Us has shared details about what we will never play.

Vinit Agarwal, the former director of the canceled multiplayer game in the world of The Last of Us, spoke about the project and revealed some previously unknown facts.

Agarwal says how that game was 80% completed and that the decision to cancel it had been made 24 hours before the game itself was supposed to be publicly presented.

Let’s remember, Sony has canceled The Last of Us multiplayer game at the end of 2023. The project was originally conceived as a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II before it was spun off into a separate game. Agarwal says that he worked on the game for a total of seven years and that the cancellation took a toll on him.

Interestingly, the basic driving force behind the game was the director’s real-life experience of being the victim of an armed robbery.

“I wanted people to feel the experience that I felt… The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic world where people are potentially hunted for food, for limited supplies. And that’s pretty much what they did to me – they basically robbed me of a McDonald’s meal. And that sense of desperation that comes from that, what you’re willing to do when you’re desperate, and that dehumanizing element where you’re hunting someone almost like an animal for scraps. The goal of the game was to gather supplies, and one of the best sources of supplies is to kill another player, right?” Agarwal said.

The former director does not reveal many details about the cancellation itself, but says that the game was a victim of an industry that overinvested during the pandemic and then collided with the fact of unsustainability.
