Toyota presented a brand new electric Urban Cruiser with a range of up to 426 kilometers

The entry model to Toyota’s world of electric SUVs, the Urban Cruiser, has been officially presented, a model that will be placed in the B-segment, below the slightly larger upcoming model C-HR+ and the already presented model with a cryptic name, the bZ4x. The Urban Cruiser shares its name with the model that was produced between 2008 and 2014 under that name, and was later introduced in several editions as the Suzuki Vitara in the Indian market. Apart from the name and character, however, the now presented model shares practically nothing with its predecessor.

LFP battery and AWD option

The new model is built on a dedicated BEV platform, so it is completely battery-electric powered, and comes with two battery options. capacity 49 kWh and 61 kWh. They use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) technology, which brings greater durability and a more favorable price. Depending on the selected battery and drive, the range of the vehicle according to the WLTP standard is up to 426 kilometers for the front-wheel drive model with a larger battery, while the all-wheel drive version offers up to 395 kilometers of range.

The battery supports fast DC charging, allowing it to be recharged from 10% to 80% capacity in approximately 45 minutes, and Toyota guarantees that the battery will retain at least 70% of its original capacity for 10 years or one million kilometers, subject to regular annual checks.

Urban Cruiser has grown by about 30 centimeters compared to its predecessor, it brings a robust design called “Urban Tech”. The interior of the vehicle is designed with an emphasis on spaciousness and flexibility, which is achieved thanks to a wheelbase of 2,700 mm and a smart arrangement of drive components. The central part of the drive is the so-called e-axle, a compact assembly that includes an electric motor, an inverter and a power transmission reduction. The small-diameter front-mounted engine saves space and increases the cabin, while the all-wheel drive option uses an additional 48 kW engine on the rear axle, which does not “enter” the luggage compartment.

Spacious cabin

The cabin offers a sliding rear seat system that allows for customization of space for passengers or luggage, with luggage space varying from 244 to 310 liters with the seats up, or up to 566 liters when the seats are fully folded. A digital user experience is provided by the integration of a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen.

In addition to standard equipment that includes a heat pump for greater energy efficiency, the Urban Cruiser also offers advanced connectivity options through the MyToyota app, which owners can use to remotely control functions such as air conditioning and charging. Drivers have a variety of driving modes available, including Eco, Normal, Sport and Pedal mode for single-pedal driving, while AWD models also offer dedicated Auto and Trail modes for more demanding terrain.

The safety package includes a collision prediction system, adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping system and traffic sign recognition on all versions. Higher equipment packages additionally offer a 360° camera system and blind spot monitoring.

The launch of the Urban Cruiser is part of a wider Toyota strategy that follows the revised bZ4X and precedes the arrival of new models such as the C-HR+, bZ4X Touring and Hilux BEV planned for 2026.
