Transport education for children through the ‘Transport Alphabet’ project

The idea of the Traffic Alphabet project is to provide children of preschool and early school age with materials useful in mastering the first traffic steps. Encourage children’s traffic education in Croatia. Since children learn most easily through play and drawing, the entire Traffic Alphabet is based on this approach.

The first pillar of the project is the educational traffic coloring book ‘You can be a super pedestrian too!’ It is the first Croatian coloring book with specific traffic education tasks for the youngest. It covers the topic of road users, pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, traffic lights, the problem of (in)visibility of a child behind a parked car…

The second pillar of the Traffic Alphabet is a handbook for schoolchildren – ‘Guide for Super Pedestrians’. It is intended for children aged seven to 11 years.

In an appropriate way, in a simplified manner and with answers to the question ‘why’, he explains the traffic rules that every child should adopt. Instead of enumerating rules based on the principle of copying them from the law, the Guide for Super Pedestrians explains to children through concrete, simple examples what consequences some action on the roads can have.

It also gives them simple advice on how they should act in each of the described situations. “Guide for Super Pedestrians” is the first book that brings traffic laws closer to children in this way.

The third pillar of the project is traffic workshops. Worksheets have been designed for them, which are mostly available for free download on the educational web portal www.prometna-abeceda.hr, the fourth pillar of the project. Through play and drawing, provide children with basic knowledge about traffic, according to today’s current traffic situations, with many vehicles of different profiles, with sidewalks blocked by parked vehicles, with speeding electric scooters. With headphones in the ears of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, because of which they are unaware of everything that is happening around them.

These are everyday situations that children encounter on their way to school or the park. They should be adequately prepared for those situations. Work with children, help them (p)remain safe in traffic.

The already mentioned, fourth pillar, the educational web portal provides advice on what, when and how to tell a child about traffic. Free download of traffic worksheets for children is possible. Right now, during the school holidays, when children have extra free time, it is the right time for them to adopt habits that will help them be safer in traffic through coloring and drawing.

These traffic worksheets are suitable for children of preschool and early school age. There are more casual ones, just enough to introduce children to traffic topics, but also those with which the little ones will need the help of their parents. Educators work on the same worksheets in the Traffic Alphabet workshops, with the fact that the workshop program also includes some additional topics.
