The new 2022 Ford Mondeo (unveiled yesterday in China) will not arrive in Europe where sales of mid-size sedans in the mainstream segment have been declining for years. Website from Motor1.com Germany contacted a local Ford branch and a spokesman confirmed that the name “Mondeo” would continue to live only in China.
As originally announced almost a year ago, the Mondeo with Euro-specification in all three body editions (liftback, sedan, station wagon) will be officially withdrawn in March 2022, when production at the Valencia plant will be completed. Meanwhile, it is one of the oldest models in its segment since the car has been around for a decade. The name Mondeo will be abolished in Europe after 30 years, since Ford replaced the Sierra with it three decades ago.
The main rival Volkswagen Pasat sedan has already been discontinued, and while there will be a next-generation model, VW reportedly plans to sell it only as a station wagon. Recent rumors suggest that Opel will also abolish the Insignia as we know it and change the formula into a mix of SUV and minivan. The medium-sized car from Rüsselsheim could follow the unconventional theme adopted by another Stellantis brand Citroen, with its C5 X of unusual shape.
On the other hand, Škoda has confirmed that it will sell the next generation Superb as a sedan (or liftback), as well as a station wagon, while the Peugeot 508 is here to remain in both body shapes for now.
In the end, the question is whether Ford will at least indirectly replace the Mondeo in Europe with something else?
Ford has added some premium details to the Mondeo, such as the handles that pop out of the door or the high-gloss element that connects the taillights. The car is 63mm longer and 23mm wider than the fourth-generation Mondeo, and the wheelbase has increased by 104mm.
Details about the engines have not been published, but earlier documents submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Technology speak of a 1.5-liter and two-liter gasoline engine, with the latter having 240hp.
New Ford Mondeo interior
There are no official pictures of the new Ford Mondeo replacement’s interior, but the architecture is expected to be the same as in the Evos model. It includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a separate central screen that extends up to 27 inches diagonally. Multimedia uses Chinese software SYNC 2.0 developed by Baidu.
