TSMC is already testing 1.4 nm next year, the era of 1 nm is getting closer

The mass production plan of TSMC’s 2 nm manufacturing process is progressing according to plan. Due to extremely strong demand on the market, the capacities for the delivery of silicon disks were at one point seriously burdened, which is why this giant in the field of semiconductor production plans to build three more new factories to meet the needs of clients.

In parallel, the development of 1.4-nanometer technology is also proceeding without interruption. According to available information, TSMC is accelerating the construction of a factory dedicated to the 1.4 nm process. If the current pace of development is maintained, the first trial production batch of this process could begin during 2027.

TSMC accelerates transition to 1.4 nm technology

Risky trial production involves a limited series of production before full mass production begins. The goal of this step is to identify potential problems in the production process in time, such as yield, performance and stability, in order to reduce the risk in the later phase of mass production and ensure a smooth release of the product to the market.

According to sources, the foundations of the factory for the 1.4 nm process began in early November 2025. The new factory is being built in the Central Science Park in Taiwan and will include four production halls as well as supporting administrative facilities.

The initial investment is estimated at around 1.5 trillion Taiwan dollars. When the factory is fully completed and put into operation, mass production is planned for 2028. Estimates say that in the first year, all four factories together will bring in about 16 billion dollars in revenue, with the creation of between 8,000 and 10,000 new jobs.

It is not yet known which customers plan to use the 1.4-nanometer manufacturing process. Earlier reports state that Apple has already secured more than half of the initial capacity of the 2 nm TSMC process for the production of the A20 and A20 Pro chips, so it can be assumed that Apple will be among the first companies to adopt the 1.4 nm technology.

It should be borne in mind that in the initial phase, the yield of correct chips in the 1.4 nm process is estimated at less than 20%. That percentage is expected to gradually increase as the technology matures, while at the same time market demand will continue to grow strongly.
