Volkswagen has officially announced the arrival of the ID model. Polo, the first of four new electric cars in the segment of small and compact vehicles, whose premiere is expected in the spring of 2026. With a starting price of 25,000 euros, the goal of the German manufacturer is to make electric mobility more accessible to a wider range of customers in Europe.
New generation, old names
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, pointed out that this model marks the beginning of a new generation of vehicles that combines fresh design, intuitive control and superior driving characteristics, with the return of established model names. Prototypes ID. Half are already in the final stages of testing around the world to ensure the highest quality, and the company has also published a photo gallery of the new model, admittedly in camouflage.
The technical specifications reveal that the ID. The Polo will be available at launch in three power levels: 85 kW (116 hp), 99 kW (135 hp) and 155 kW (211 hp), while a sporty GTI version with 166 kW will follow later next year. The basic versions will be equipped with an LFP battery with a net capacity of 37 kWh with the possibility of charging up to 90 kW. More powerful versions will use the new NMC variant of the unified battery cell (Unified Cell) with a capacity of 52 kWh, which enables a range of up to 450 kilometers and charging with up to 130 kW.
The new model is the first to introduce the “Pure Positive” design language, under the leadership of design chief Andreas Mindt. The vehicle is based on the improved MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive, which brings significant advantages in space utilization and cost reduction.
Although its dimensions (length 4,053 mm) are comparable to the classic Polo, the electric ID. The Polo offers a 24% larger trunk, with a volume of 435 liters, and an additional 19 millimeters of length in the interior. New “cell-to-pack” battery technology eliminates the need for modules, which reduces weight and increases energy density by about 10 percent. All of this is driven by a highly efficient electric motor of the latest generation.
ID development. Pola is the result of cooperation within the “Brand Group Core” group, whereby the project was led by SEAT and CUPRA, while the design was conceived at Volkswagen’s center in Wolfsburg. Production will take place at the factory in Martorello, Spain. In addition to the advanced drive, the model will also be equipped with new generation assistance systems, including improved Travel Assist, which for the first time in this class offers recognition of traffic lights and stop signs and assisted lane change on the highway.
