Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra arrives, Samsung has changed its mind

Samsung seems to have made a final decision on the names of its two upcoming high-end folding models. As portat exclusively learns SamMobilethe South Korean company plans to officially call them Fold8 i Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.

The most interesting part of this strategy is the distribution of names among the models:

  • The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra will be the direct successor of the Galaxy Z Fold7 i model
  • Galaxy Z Fold8 will be the name for the wider model, so far known as Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide.

The standard Fold8 is expected to be wider and lower than the Ultra variant. It’s a format similar to the upcoming foldable iPhone model. However, this wider format brings with it certain compromises. The phone will lose one of its rear cameras, a move similar to that of the Galaxy S25 Edge.

Is the name Ultra the right solution?

While the decision to call the wider model simply the Fold8 seems reasonable, the introduction Ultra names for the more expensive Fold8 will undoubtedly raise a number of questions. Samsung Galaxy S Ultra smartphones have set extremely high standards in the market thanks to features such as a built-in S Pen and an advanced camera system with 3x and 5x telephoto sensors.

The current Galaxy S26 Ultra has gone one step further, introducing 60W charging, 25W wireless, as well as a unique, world-first screen with privacy protection (Privacy Display). Some very important improvements are being announced for the Fold8 Ultra compared to last year’s Fold7. However, the specs still lag behind the S series. Expected specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra:

  • Battery with a capacity of 5,000 mAh
  • Fast charging power 45 W i
  • 50 MP ultra-wide-angle camera.

On the other hand, features like privacy screen, integrated S Pen, 60W charging and more powerful optical zoom according to current information will not be part of this package. Therefore, there is a justified risk that the word will Ultra in the segment of foldable phones to some extent dilute.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra competition and premiere

It is interesting to note that there are a lot of rumors in IT circles about what the name of the first bendable Apple phone will be iPhone Ultra. It’s hard to say for sure if that information influenced Samsung’s naming decision, but the timing is at least indicative. However, one should remain objective – Samsung has been using the Ultra designation for its Galaxy S line since 2020. Therefore, it cannot be claimed that the company is copying ideas from the Apple company here. reminds SamMobile.

The full Galaxy Z Fold8 lineup, along with the new clamshell Galaxy Z Flip8, should be officially unveiled at the next Samsung Unpacked event scheduled for July 22. Sources also suggest that Samsung may raise the prices of its new foldable devices further. The company follows a trend already established with this year’s Galaxy S26 series.
