Samsung has unveiled new display technology for its upcoming flip phones. It’s called Flex Titanium Technology and will debut on July 22, at the company’s second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year.
According to Samsung, Flex Titanium is based on seven generations of experience in the development of flip devices. The new screen structure uses more advanced materials and construction solutions to provide a better display, greater durability and less visible bending at the bend point.
Samsung states that Flex Titanium technology combines two titanium-based components:
- titanium alloy film
- titanium plate
Together, their task is to provide a better balance between thin casing, flexibility and strength within the structure of the folding screen.
The Samsung Flex Titanium uses a titanium layer for a more durable flip screen
The company explains that for such a screen, a material was needed that is strong enough to withstand external shocks, flexible enough to be constantly bent, but also thin enough to fit into the slimmer design of the device. Samsung claims that it has found that balance in titanium.
The application of titanium in the folding screen was not simple. Samsung recalls that titanium is used in very demanding areas, including satellite antennas and the wheels of the Mars rover, but that fitting it into the flexible structure of the screen was a special engineering challenge.
The titanium alloy film is located under the OLED panel and serves as an internal support for the screen. Compared to polymer film, Samsung claims it provides 20 times greater mechanical rigidity.
Underneath that structure is a titanium plate. It allows for a tighter connection to the display module by eliminating air gaps between the module and the adhesive on the board. Such a construction should provide more stable support under the screen when the device is open, but without losing the flexibility needed for everyday bending.
The new technology should appear on upcoming Samsung flip models:
- Galaxy Z Fold 8
- Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
- Galaxy Z Flip 8
Samsung is expected to present the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 at the same event. If the Flex Titanium lives up to the announcements, the biggest gain for users could be a stronger screen, a thinner design and a less noticeable bend, which are the three most important points for modern flip phones, reports Android Headlines.
