Microsoft changed the board, now claims that 8 GB of RAM is enough for Windows 11 laptops

The success of the affordable MacBook Neo computer with 8 GB of memory has also encouraged Windows laptop manufacturers to reconsider less equipped configurations. At a time when RAM prices are on the rise, reducing the amount of memory becomes one of the easiest ways to lower the price of a laptop computer. Microsoft has now joined that trend. The company introduced the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop devices with 8 GB of RAM, priced at $849.99 and $949.99. Compared to the versions with 16 GB of memory, the new models can be cheaper by up to approximately 20 percent.

The lower price, however, comes with a clear limitation. Microsoft requires at least 16 GB of memory for Copilot+ PC devices and their AI functions, so the new Surface configurations with 8 GB do not meet that requirement. The customer therefore gets a cheaper device, but without some of the features that Microsoft currently promotes the most.

Microsoft Surface with 8 GB of RAM remains without Copilot+ PC functions

In addition, the starting prices of these Surface models are still higher than the price of MacBook Neo computers. That comparison becomes even more unpleasant when you consider that the Apple device, despite the same amount of RAM, according to the first experiences of users, provides completely fluid work in everyday tasks.

Microsoft also changed the official recommendation at the same time. The company now states that 8GB is sufficient for web browsing, streaming, document processing, and other basic tasks. This noticeably departs from earlier messages, which emphasized the advantage of configurations with 16 or 32 GB of memory much more strongly.

Such a turn caused criticism from a large part of the technology community. Media outlets like Windows Latest believe that the MacBook Neo can function with 8 GB primarily because macOS has been optimized for Apple chips and a tightly controlled hardware ecosystem for years.

Windows 11, on the other hand, has to run on a huge number of different configurations, with a larger number of background services, drivers and manufacturer applications. Therefore, 8 GB of RAM on a Windows laptop can become a limitation much faster, especially when the user opens a large number of tabs, runs several applications or uses more demanding programs.

The problem isn’t the claim that an 8GB computer can’t handle basic tasks. It can, but with less reserves for future upgrades, more intensive multitasking and new AI functions. With devices that cost close to $1,000, such a compromise is difficult to present as an exceptionally good value.

Microsoft may claim that 8 GB is enough for basic use, but such a message only makes sense if Windows 11 actually works efficiently enough on that amount of memory. Otherwise, cheaper Surface models risk becoming more affordable in the short term, but limited choice in the long term.
