Netflix has hired a former CEO of Oculus and EA to lead its gaming development efforts.
Netflix may be a platform for TV shows, movies, and games in the near future, most likely next year. According to Bloomberg, the company has hired Mike Verdu, former CEO of Oculus and EA, as vice president of game development. Verdu was vice president of augmented and virtual reality games and content on Facebook, where he worked with developers for Oculus Rift, Quest, and Go. From 2017 to 2018, he was also the head of EA Mobile and oversaw studies, among others, at Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, SimCity BuildIt, Plants vs. Zombies, and Sims Free Play.
The US company will reportedly build its gaming team in the coming months so that it can start offering streaming games in the next year. Netflix is not very inexperienced in this area and has previously developed games based on its popular shows. However, he published those titles on mobile devices and consoles – Bloomberg says that the company will not create a separate platform for its upcoming video games, but will make them available together with its shows and movies in its category. Also, the streaming giant reportedly has no plans to charge extra for access to the games, although it is unclear whether the additional content will lead to future price increases.
As competitors emerge both left and right, Netflix is looking for ways to grow and ensure it stays ahead of the competition, especially in saturated markets like the US. Adding video games to your repertoire seems to be the answer.
