What is stevia and why is it becoming increasingly popular today?
Stevia is a relatively new trend in the food industry, and it is a plant of South American origin whose extract is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. That information sounds interesting, but it doesn’t provide an answer to why it’s better than sugar? That something is sweeter for us doesn’t have much value unless we love something that is very sweet? Wrong.
What is special about stevia is that it is an extract that does not have the calories that sugar has. Stevia is thus a universal answer for anyone who wants to continue to enjoy a sweetener that will not make them obese. This plant has become popular over the last decades, but only in the last 10 years has it conquered a huge market space. Today we have isolated stevia to replace sugar, we have stevia-based juices, whole dishes that use stevia specifically and much more. It is a natural sweetener, but also a calorie-free sweetener – which is why it is so popular.
Are there any health risk?
Stevia consumption is growing year by year, and today there are many family growers and small family farms that produce their own stevia, outside of South America. If it is so good, has no calories and serves as a natural sweetener, it seems to be the ideal substance for everyone. There are many studies that have been undertaken to reveal the possible health risk for a man if he takes stevia daily, but nothing has been found.
There are some studies that say that stevia is bad for the kidneys and creates damage to our digestive system, but this was refuted very quickly because it was actually additional ingredients that were put into something that was sold as “pure stevia“. So, this plant has no proven risks to your health. The only danger lies in an allergic reaction, ie you can be allergic to stevia and thus have negative consequences from consuming this plant. Yet, other than that, nothing was ever found that would be generally confirmed.
Stevia as a future sugar substitute?
As we have said, today stevia is increasingly used in various dishes, cakes, juices and many other food products. You can also get stevia in Croatia at a relatively affordable price and see for yourself its charm. For some, that charm isn’t so positive – stevia yet it doesn’t taste the same as sugar, and those biggest sugar fans won’t be able to get used to this substitute right away.
Still, she should be given a chance because she is healthy, helps those who have a weight problem, and is very good for diabetics as well. Stevia should be well dosed to make this sweet taste go well with a meal or drink. You can also add stevia to coffee or tea, although reduce the dose because, as we have already said, it is a plant much sweeter than pure sugar. It should also be said that stevia production requires less resources than pure white sugar, so the question arises whether these plants will at some point completely replace white sugar? We won’t find out so soon.
